It can be measured: Fast Growth Advisors scores it on 15 criteria, and its Observatory measured 369 French post-funding startups. Average score: 5.33 out of 10, none above 8. 01Definition
What is Message-Market Fit?
A market that does not understand does not compare. It moves on.
In practice, it is the gap between what you say and what your market takes away. You have it when a prospect on your site answers three questions unaided, in this order.
Take a common example: “We help companies accelerate their transformation with an innovative platform.” Every word is true, and the sentence fits hundreds of vendors.
Your prospect learns neither what is sold, nor to whom, nor why this supplier.
You can see the gap in four places: the homepage, the sales deck, the reps’ pitch and, more recently, the answer an AI engine gives when asked whom to choose. When those four versions diverge, the market remembers the vaguest one.
Fast Growth Advisors uses the term in its strict sense: a measurement, not an impression.
What you do
Your offer, in the buyer’s own words.
Who it is for
An audience you name, not “businesses”.
Why you
What a competitor could not write in your place.
Question three is the expensive one. A page can be clear about the offer and the audience, and still fit any competitor’s mouth.
02The difference
What is the difference between Message-Market Fit and product-market fit?
Product-market fit means a product has found its market: customers pay to solve the problem it solves. What remains to check is whether the product is understood before the purchase, by buyers who have never used it, and that is Message-Market Fit.
| Question | Product-market fit | Message fit |
|---|---|---|
| What is measured | Does the product solve a problem customers pay to solve? | Does the market understand the product before buying it? |
| Who answers | Customers, through retention and usage | Prospects, in a few seconds on a page |
| Symptom when missing | The product does not sell again | Longer cycles, a pitch that changes from one rep to the next |
| What fixes it | The product | The message |
A funding round proves the first, rarely the second.
At Fast Growth Advisors, most of the startups we audit have achieved the first and not yet the second.

03Measurement
How do you measure Message-Market Fit?
Our measurements start from what a buyer sees before calling: the website, LinkedIn, press coverage, funding announcements. Each criterion is scored from 0 to 5, 75 points in total, and the critical clarity threshold is set at 37.5 out of 75. On top of that, the audit adds interviews with the leadership team and five layers of AI visibility.

04The data
What do the measurements show about French startups?
Across 369 French post-funding startups, the average score is 5.33 out of 10 and none scores above 8. Across the 83 detailed audits, 75.9% sit below the critical threshold of 37.5 out of 75.

R² between amount raised and clarity
of potential in AI engine readiness
Raising more does not buy clarity: between the amount raised and message clarity, the correlation is close to zero (R² = 0.036).
Last on the list: readiness for AI engines, 0.91 out of 5, or 18% of potential. A message that is vague for a human is vague for ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews too, and they cite what they understand.
Across 94 complete 15-criteria audits, no criterion goes above 60% of its potential. Even the best-rated stay below 3 out of 5: differentiation at 2.62, message clarity at 2.59.
At the bottom of the ranking sit content marketing, lead generation and GEO readiness, between 0.91 and 1.18 out of 5.
In other words, startups roughly know what they mean to say. They are far less able to make it travel, and even less able to make it readable for a machine that summarises.

05What it changes
What does a company gain when its market gets the message?
A message that lands does part of the sorting before the first meeting. Prospects arrive knowing what you do, and your sales team stops re-explaining the company on every call.
Discovery calls change nature: less time presenting the offer, more time on the prospect’s need.
Second effect, internal this time. When the website, the deck and the pitch say the same thing, teams stop contradicting each other in front of customers.
Third effect: answer engines recommend the companies they can describe in one sentence.
All three effects start from the same place: a sentence your market can repeat without you. That is what the 15 Fast Growth Advisors criteria measure.

06Where to start
How do you improve Message-Market Fit?
Fast Growth Advisors offers three ways in, depending on what you already know.
Starting point, always the same: one sentence that says what you do, who it is for, and why you. Fast Growth Advisors frames it as a Point of View, four sentences: who you are, what you offer, what sets you apart, the value you deliver.
Only then come the channels.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between product-market fit and Message-Market Fit?
Product-market fit measures whether a product solves a problem strong enough for customers to pay. Message-Market Fit measures whether that product is understood before the purchase: what it does, who it is for, and why it rather than a competitor. A startup can have found its market and still be unreadable to it.
How can I tell if my company has a Message-Market Fit problem?
First sign: your sales team re-explains the company in every meeting. Second sign: the website, the deck and the pitch do not describe the same thing. Quick test: swap your name for a competitor’s in your homepage headline. If the sentence is still true, your message does not say why you. For a first score, run the free Fast Growth Advisors diagnostic.
How long does it take to fix an unclear message?
The measurement takes 48 hours. Behind it, the audit costs €3,000 excluding VAT and covers 15 criteria and five layers of AI visibility; before it, the free diagnostic gives a first score in a few minutes. Rebuilding the message then takes two days on average, a week at most, starting with a four-sentence Point of View. Next comes the longest part: getting the teams to adopt the message, then rolling it out on every channel. Fast Growth Advisors supports that phase without producing in place of your teams.
Does raising funds make the message clearer?
No, according to our data. Across 346 French startups whose amount raised is known, the link between the amount raised and message clarity is close to zero (R² = 0.036). An investor had hours to understand the project, a buyer decides in a few seconds on a page.
Does Message-Market Fit only apply to startups?
No. Any company that sells to other businesses knows this gap. Fast Growth Advisors’ Observatory measures French post-funding startups, but the 15-criterion grid applies just as well to an established SME (small or medium-sized enterprise) or a larger group. As for symptoms, they barely change: longer cycles, a pitch that varies from one rep to the next, prospects who compare without deciding.
